Sarah Murphy has created her own unique jewelry making process inspired by the ancient Japanese technique of Kintsugi. Through her research of this ancient process of repairing broken objects with a gold adhesive she has adapted the technique to create “imperfect” jewelry. Her work fuses and reinvents bits of metal, transforming them into objects of value. Murphy believes the process of Kintsugi is equivalent to the process of empowerment. Her work challenges the standard of perfection in jewelry by working with uncontrollable forms. The work of Sarah Murphy expresses a belief that jewelry is not a precious object due to its material value, but rather due to the invisible narrative connected to it.
